Silver Talon arose from the ashes of Portland metal group Spellcaster, who disbanded in 2017. Guitarists Bryce VanHoosen and Sebastian Silva teamed up and managed to breathe new life into the project right away. Their chemistry was undeniable from the get-go, and they sealed the deal with the addition of vocalist Wyatt Howell, who helped Silver Talon further refocus their identity and sound. By late 2018, the band had several songs under its belt, and it didn’t take long for the group to release a well-received debut EP, “Becoming A Demon.”
The release managed to capture the band’s uncompromising and raw-edged sound with a selection of five original songs. There was even room for a collaboration with Jeff Loomis (Arch Enemy / Nevermore) who blazed through a killer guitar solo for an additional cover of Sanctuary’s cult classic “Battle Angels.” With a few line-up changes, and Sebastian Silva struggling with visa issues, the band had a tumultuous 2019. However, they managed to spin the odds in their favor, adding guitarist Devon Miller, bassist Walter Hartzell, and drummer Michael Thompson, and embracing a 6-piece line up with three guitarists, giving the band unprecedented power and versatility.
Although 2020 has also been a rather grim year for music, the combo managed to stay focused and productive. They released a single titled “Deceiver, I Am” in early December, which furthered the group’s sound and creative vision. With three guitarists on tap, the arrangements are even deeper and more dimensional, allowing the band to branch out and focus on layering their music. The song stays true to the band’s conceptual identity, exploring occult topics and demonology, all with a cyberpunk/dystopian twist. The name of the band itself happens to be a reference to the Sumerian demon-bird Anzû, who defied the gods and stole the tablet of destiny in a quest to become the ruler of the whole universe. The angular industrial soundscapes of Silver Talon’s music work well in combination with their classic influences, as their sound tips the hat off to well-respected acts such as King Diamond, Judas Priest, and Alice in Chains, only to mention a few.
